The Rolling Stones: Blue & Lonesome

On December 2, 2016, “Polydor” label released “Blue & Lonesome”, the 23rd Rolling Stones album. It was recorded in December 2015, at “British Grove Studios” and was produced by Don Was and The Glimmer Twins. It is the band’s first album to feature only cover songs. The album won “Album of the Year” at the “2017 Jazz FM Awards”. “Blue & Lonesome” was certified Platinum in Austria by “IFPI Austria”; Platinum in Belgium by “BEA”; 2 x Platinum in France by “SNEP”; Platinum in Poland by “ZPAV”, and Platinum in UK by “BPI”.

On March 18, 2017, Charles Edward Anderson “Chuck” Berry died aged 90.  He was musician (guitar), singer and songwriter, one of the pioneers and most important figures of rock and roll music. His songs “Maybellene” (1955), “Roll Over Beethoven” (1956), “Rock and Roll Music” (1957) and “Johnny B. Goode” (1958), defined the contours of rock and roll music, and changed the face of popular music. His unique guitar solos and stage appearance made lasting influence on subsequent rock artists, including names like The Beatles or The Rolling Stones. In 1984, Berry was awarded “Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award”. He was among the first musicians to be inducted into the “Rock and Roll Hall of Fame” on its opening in 1986. In 2004, “Rolling Stone” magazine ranked him at number 5 on its list of the “100 Greatest Artists of All Time”. The same magazine ranked his compilation album “The Great Twenty-Eight” at number 21 on its list of the “500 Greatest Albums of All Time”. His songs “Johnny B. Goode,” “Maybellene,” and “Rock and Roll Music”, are included in the “Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s 500 Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll”. “Johnny B. Goode” is the only rock-and-roll song included on the “Voyager Golden Record”. In 2014, Berry was made a laureate of the “Polar Music Prize”.

On December 2, 2014, Robert Henry “Bobby” Keys died aged 70. Being saxophonist he has recorded and performed with many famous musicians and bands, among them: The Rolling Stones, Joe Cocker, George Harrison, John Lennon, Keith Richards, Ringo Starr, Ronnie Wood, B.B. On November 13, 2016, Claude Russell Bridges aka Leon Russell died aged 74. He was musician (piano, keyboards, guitar, bass, baritone horn) and songwriter, with successful solo career. His best known track “A Song for You ”,has been recorded and performed by more than 100 music acts. Russell has recorded and performed with many famous musicians including  The Beach Boys, Jan and Dean, John Lennon, Ringo Starr  ,George Harrison, Elton John, Bob Dylan, Frank Sinatra, Ike & Tina Turner, and the Rolling Stones. In 2011, Russell was inducted into the “Rock and Roll Hall of Fame”

On August 29, 1989, “Rolling Stones” label released “Steel Wheels”, the 19th Rolling Stones (The) studio album. It was recorded March – June 1989, at “Air Studios” in Montserrat, and was produced by Chris Kimsey and The Glimmer Twins. The album was certified 3 x Platinum in Canada by “Music Canada”, and 2 x Platinum in the US by the “RIIA”. “Steel Wheels” was the last Bill Wyman’s full-length studio album with The Rolling Stones.

On August 24, 1981, “Rolling Stones” label released “Tattoo You”, the sixteen Rolling Stones (The) album. It was recorded November–December 1972, January–March 1975, January–March 1978, January–October 1979, October 1980 – June 1981, and was produced by The Glimmer Twins. In 1989, “Rolling Stone” magazine ranked “Tattoo You” at number 213 on its list of the “500 Greatest Albums of All Time”. Peter Corriston, who was responsible for the album art direction and design, won a “Grammy Award” in the category of “Best Album Package”. The album was certified 4 x Platinum in Canada by “Music Canada” and 4 x Platinum in the US by the “RIIA”.

It was recorded September 1993 – April 1994, and was produced by Don Was and The Glimmer Twins. “Voodoo Lounge” is the band’s first album without Bill Wyman on bass, and the last Rolling Stones album published on cassette. The album was certified 3 x Platinum in Canada by “Music Canada”; Platinum in Germany by “BVMI”; Platinum in Mexico by “AMPROFON”; Platinum in Netherlands by “NVPI” and 2 x Platinum in the US by the “RIIA”.
