Sufjan Stevens: Carrie & Lowell

On March 31, 2015, “Asthmatic Kitty” label released “Carrie & Lowell”, the seventh  Sufjan Stevens album. It was recorded in 2014, at “Flora Recording & Playback”, “Black Watch”, “April Base”, and was produced by Thomas Bartlett. “Carrie & Lowell” was voted album of the year 2015 by the oldest Netherland music magazine “OOR” and by UK retailer “HMV”.

Chuck Berry

On March 18, 2017, Charles Edward Anderson “Chuck” Berry died aged 90.  He was musician (guitar), singer and songwriter, one of the pioneers and most important figures of rock and roll music. His songs “Maybellene” (1955), “Roll Over Beethoven” (1956), “Rock and Roll Music” (1957) and “Johnny B. Goode” (1958), defined the contours of rock and roll music, and changed the face of popular music. His unique guitar solos and stage appearance made lasting influence on subsequent rock artists, including names like The Beatles or The Rolling Stones. In 1984, Berry was awarded “Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award”. He was among the first musicians to be inducted into the “Rock and Roll Hall of Fame” on its opening in 1986. In 2004, “Rolling Stone” magazine ranked him at number 5 on its list of the “100 Greatest Artists of All Time”. The same magazine ranked his compilation album “The Great Twenty-Eight” at number 21 on its list of the “500 Greatest Albums of All Time”. His songs “Johnny B. Goode,” “Maybellene,” and “Rock and Roll Music”, are included in the “Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s 500 Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll”. “Johnny B. Goode” is the only rock-and-roll song included on the “Voyager Golden Record”. In 2014, Berry was made a laureate of the “Polar Music Prize”.

Graham Parker: Squeezing Out Sparks

In March 1979, “Arista” label released “Squeezing out Sparks” the fourth Graham Parker and the Rumour album. It was recorded 1977-1978, at “Lansdowne Studios” in London, and was produced by Jack Nitzsche. “Squeezing out Sparks” was voted album of the year in the 1979 “Village Voice Pazz & Jop Critics Poll”. “Rolling Stone” magazine ranked the album at number 334 on list of the “500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

In March 1978, “E.G. Records” label released the self-titled, debut U.K. album. It was recorded December 1977-January 1978, at “Trident Studios” in London, and was produced by Alan Holdsworth, Eddie Jobson, John Wetton and Bill Bruford. In 2015, “Rolling Stone” magazine ranked the album at number 35 in its list of the “Best Progressive Albums All Time”.

Monks: Black Monks Time

In March 1966, “Polydor” label released “Black Monk Time”, the debut Monks studio album. It was recorded in November 1965, in Cologne, Germany, and was produced by Jimmy Bowien. The album’s musical style and lyrical content was radical for its time and today is considered an important landmark in the development of punk rock. In 2001, “Black Monk Time” was included in the Sunday Herald’s “The 103 Best Albums Ever, Honest” list, and in 2005, “Word” magazine included it in list “Hidden Treasure: Great Underrated Albums of Our Time”.

In March 1982, “Jugoton” label released “Odbrana i poslednji dani” (The Defense and the Last Days), the debut Idoli studio album. It was  recorded 1981 – 1982, at “Studios XIII and VI, Radio Belgrade” in Belgrade, Serbia, and was produced by Vlada Divljan, Nebojša Krstić, Srđan Šaper, Zdenko Kolar and Kokan Popović. In 1998, it was voted “Yugoslav Greatest Popular Music Album” in the book “YU 100: The Best Albums of Yugoslav Pop and Rock Music”. In 2015, in the special issue of the Croatian edition of “Rolling Stone” magazine, “Odbrana i poslednji dani” was voted the “Greatest Yugoslav Rock Album of all Time.

John Martyn: Solid Air

In February 1973, “Island” label released “Solid Air”, the fourth John Martyn studio album. It was recorded November – December 1972, at “Island Studios”, “Basing Street”, “Sound Techinques” in London, and was produced by John Martyn and John Wood. The title track “Solid Air” was dedicated to Nick Drake. “Q” magazine ranked the album at number 67 on its list of the “Greatest British Album Ever”, and was was also included in their list of “Best Chill-Out Albums of All Time”.

In February 1970, “Warner Bros” label released “Sweet Baby James”, the second James Taylor studio album. It was recorded in December 1969, at “Sunset Sound” in Los Angeles, and was produced by Peter Asher. “Rolling Stone” magazine ranked “Sweet Baby James” at number 103 on its list of the “Greatest Albums of All Time”. In 2003 the TV network “VH1” named  the album the 77th greatest album of all time. “Sweet Baby James” was certified 3 x Platinum in the US by “RIIA”.

It was recorded in 1968, at “A&M Studios” in Los Angeles, and was produced by Henry Lewy and Larry Marks. “Rolling Stone” magazine ranked “The Gilded Palace of Sin” at number 192 in its list of the “500 Greatest Albums of All Time.”

In January 1974, “Reprise” label released “Grievous Angel”, the second Gram Parsons solo album. It was compiled from summer 1973 sessions recorded at “Wally Heider Studio 4” in Hollywood, produced by Gram Parsons, and was released four months after his death in September 1973. In 2012, “Rolling Stone” magazine ranked the album at number 425  on its list of the “500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
