U2: Rattle And Hum

On October 10, 1988, “Island” label released “Rattle and Hum”, the sixth U2 studio album. It was recorded 1987 – 1988, at “Sun Studio” in Memphis; “Point Depot”; “Danesmoat”, and “STS Studio” in Dublin; “A&M Studios” and  “Ocean Way”  in Los Angeles, and live in various locations, and was produced by Jimmy Iovine. The album was accompanied by a rockumentary film directed by Phil Joanou. “Rattle and Hum” was certified 7 x Platinum in Canada by “Music Canada”; Platinum in Germany by “BVMI”; Platinum in Netherlands; 2 x Platinum in Switzerland by “IFPI Switzerland”; 4 x Platinum in UK by “BPI”, and 5 x Platinum in the US by “RIIA”.

On September 9, 2014, “Island” label released “Songs of Innocence”, the thirteenth U2 studio album. It was recorded 2009 – 2014, and was produced by Danger Mouse, with additional production from Paul Epworth,Ryan Tedder, Declan Gaffney and Flood. The album was certified 2 x Platinum in Italy by “FIMI” and 2 x Platinum in Poland by “ZPAV”.

Nina Simone

On April 21, 2003, Eunice Kathleen Waymon aka Nina Simone, died aged 70. She was singer, songwriter, musician (piano), arranger, and civil rights activist. In her career, Simone has recorded more than forty albums. Many famous musicians have cited Simone as their influence, among the others: Aretha Franklin, Adele, David Bowie, Antony and the Johnsons, Dianne Reeves , Sade , Beyoncé,  Janis Joplin , Nick Cave, Jeff Buckley, Van Morrison, Elkie Brooks, Lena Horne, Bono, Cat Stevens, Peter Gabriel, Mary J. Blige, Lauryn Hill, Elton John, Alicia Keys and Lana Del Rey. John Lennon cited Simone’s version of “I Put a Spell on You” as a inspiration for the Beatles’ song “Michelle”.

For her work, Simone received various awards including:

  • In 2000, “Grammy Hall of Fame Award”for her interpretation of “I Love You, Porgy”
  • Honorary degrees in music and humanities, from the “University of Massachusetts Amherst” and “Malcolm X College”
  • Honorary degree by the “Curtis Institute of Music”
  • In 2002, city of Nijmegen, in Netherlands, named a street the “Nina Simone straat
  • In 2009, Simone was inducted into the “North Carolina Music Hall of Fame”
  • In 2010, her home town Tryon, in North Carolina, placed her statue in the “Trade Street”

On March 3, 1997, “Island” label released “Pop”, the ninth U2 studio album. It was recorded in 1995 and 1996, at “Hanover Quay Studios”, “Windmill Lane Studios” “The Works” in Dublin, and “South Beach Studios” in Miami, and was produced by Flood, Howie B and  Steve Osborne.

It was recorded May – August 1982, at “Windmill Lane Studios” in Dublin, and was produced by Steve Lillywhite and Bill Whelan. In 2012, magazine “Rolling Stone” ranked “War” at number 223  on its list of  the “500 Greatest Albums of all Time”.

Roy Orbison: Mystery Girl

On January 31, 1989, “Virgin” label released posthumously “Mystery Girl”, the twenty – second Roy Orbison album. It was recorded July 1987 – November 1988, and was produced by Roy Orbison, Mike Campbell, Jeff Lynne, T Bone Burnett, Barbara Orbison and  Bono. On December 6, 1988, Orbison died from a heart attack aged 52.

The album won “Grammy” in 1993 for “Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal”.

The album and its songs won seven “Grammy Awards”.  In 2012, “Rolling Stone” magazine ranked “All That You Can’t Leave Behind” at number 280 at its list of “The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time”.
