John Coltrane: Newport ’63

On July 20, 1993, “Impulse!” label released “Newport ’63”, a live album by John Coltrane. It was recorded  in July 1963, at the “Newport Jazz Festival”, with one track recorded in 1961, at the “Village Vanguard” in New York City, and was produced by Bob Thiele.

The Blues Project: Live at the Cafe Au Go Go

In March 1966, “Verve / Folkways” labels, released “Live at the Cafe Au Go Go”, the debut Blues Project (The) album. It was recorded in November 1965, at the “Cafe Au Go Go” in New York City, during the Blues Bag four-day concert, and January 1966, at the same venue, and was produced by Jerry Schoenbaum.

On January 9, 1964, “Impulse!” label released “Live at Birdland”, album by John Coltrane (the seventh album for Impulse!). It was recorded March, October and November 1963, at “Birdland” in New York City, “Van Gelder Studio” in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, and was produced by Bob Thiele.

In October 1958, “Prestige” label released “Soultrane”, the fourth John Coltrane album. It was recorded in February 1958, at “Van Gelder Studio” in Hackensack, New Jersey, and was produced by Bob Weinstock and Del Costello.

In December 1962, “Blue Note” label released “Go!” the 18th Dexter Gordon album. It was recorded in August 1962, at “Van Gelder Studio” in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, and was produced by Alfred Lion. In 2019, “Go!” was selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the “National Recording Registry” for being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant”.

Benny Carter

On July 12, 2003, Bennett Lester “Benny” Carter, died aged 96. He was musician (alto saxophone, clarinet, trumpet), composer, arranger, and bandleader,  regarded a major figure in jazz from the 1930s to the 1990s. In his career the “King” performed with Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan, Coleman Hawkins, Peggy Lee, Carmen McRae, Ella Fitzgerald, Ray Charles, Miles Davis,  Django Reinhardt, Benny Goodman, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Lena Horne, Glenn Miller, Gene Krupa, Tommy Dorsey, Phil Woods, Dizzy Gillespie, Earl Hines, Ben Webster, Billy Eckstine, Pearl Bailey, Lou Rawls, Louis Armstrong, Freddie Slack and Mel Torme.

For his work Benny Carter received big number of awards including: “The NEA Jazz Masters Award by The National Endowment for the Arts”, “Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award” , “Grammy Award” for his solo “Prelude to a Kiss”, “A Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame”, “National Endowment for the Arts”, “National Medal of Arts”.
