David Bowie: Scary Monsters

On September 12, 1980, “RCA” label released “Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps)” the fourteenth David Bowie studio album. It was recorded February – April 1980, at “The Power Station” in London, and was produced by David Bowie and Tony Visconti. In 2000, “Q” magazine ranked “Scary Monsters” at number 30 in its list of the “100 Greatest British Albums Ever”. In 2013, “NME” magazine ranked the album at number 381 on its list of “The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time”. The album was certified Platinum in Canada by “Music Canada”, and in UK by the “BPI”.

In 2002, at the “Q Awards” the album was awarded “Best Album”. In 2003, the album won Coldplay “Grammy Awards” for “Best Alternative Album” and for “Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal” for the song “In My Place”, and was voted “Best British Album” at the “BRIT Awards”. In 2012, “Rolling Stone” magazine ranked “A Rush of Blood to the Head” at number 466 on its list of the “500 Greatest Albums of All Time”. On August 5, 1969, “Elektra” label released the self-titled, debut  Stooges album. It was recorded in April 1969; at “The Hit Factory” in New York City and was produced by John Cale. In 2003, “Rolling Stone” magazine ranked the album at number 185 on its list of the “500 Greatest Albums of All Time”, and ranked the song “1969” in the list of the “100 Greatest Guitar Songs of All Time”. In 2005, “Q” magazine ranked the song “I Wanna Be Your Dog” at number 13 in its list of the “100 Greatest Guitar Tracks”.

It was recorded January – June 1968, at “Decca Studios” in West Hampstead, in London, and was produced by Tony Clarke. In the “Q”  and  “Mojo” “Classic Special Edition Pink Floyd & The Story of Prog Rock”, “In Search of the Lost Chord” was ranked at number 37 in the list of “40 Cosmic Rock Albums”.

On July 18, 1980, “Factory” label released “Closer”, the second and final Joy Division studio album.It was released following the May 1980 suicide of lead singer Ian Curtis. “Closer” was recorded in March 1980, at “Britannia Row Studios” in London, and was produced by Martin Hannett. “NME” ranked the album at number 72 on its list of the “100 Greatest British Albums Ever”; “Rolling Stone” magazine ranked “Closer” at number 157 on its list of “500 Greatest Albums of All Time”; in 2006, “Q” magazine ranked the album at number 8 on its list of the “Best Albums of the 1980s”, and “Slant” magazine ranked it at number 7 on its list of the “Best Albums of the 1980s”.

The album design was by Storm Thorgerson. In 2008, in a “Q” magazine public vote, “Black Holes and Revelations” was ranked at number 34 on the list of the “The Best British Albums of All time”. The album was certified Platinum in Australia by “ARIA”; Platinum in Canada by “Music Canada”; 3 x Platinum in France by “SNEP”;  Platinum in Ireland by “IRMA”; Platinum in Italy by “FIMI”; Platinum in Switzerland by “IFPI Switzerland” and 3 x Platinum in UK by the “BPI”.

It was recorded in 1987, at “Chung King Studios”, “Greene St. Recording” and “Sabella Studios” in New York, and was produced by Chuck D, Rick Rubin and Hank Shocklee. The album  has been regarded by the music critics as one of the greatest and most influential albums of all time In 2003, “Rolling Stone” magazine Sabella Studios, New York, ranked it at number 48 on its list of the “500 greatest albums of all time”, in 1995, “Q” magazine voted “It Takes a Nation” “The Greatest Rap Album of All Time”. The album was certified Platinum in the US by the “RIIA”.

On June 22, 1971, “Reprise” label released “Blue”, the fourth Joni  Mitchell album. It was recorded in 1971, at “A&M Studios” in Los Angeles, and was produced by Joni Mitchell. The album was both critical and commercial success, regarded by critics as one of the greatest albums of all time. In 1999, “Blue” was awarded with the “Grammy Hall of Fame” award; in 2002, “Q” magazine ranked “Blue” at number eight on its list of the “Greatest Album of All-Time by a Female Artist”; in 2003, “Rolling Stone” magazine ranked “Blue” at number thirty on its list of the “500 Greatest Albums of All Time”, and in 2012, the same magazine ranked the album at number two on its list of “Women Who Rock: The 50 Greatest Female Albums Of All Time”.
