On January 2, 1974, “Atlantic” label released “Wild Tales”, the second Graham Nash studio album.  It was recorded in 1973, at  “Rudy Records Studio” in San Francisco, and was produced by Graham Nash.

The Complete Matrix Tapes

On November 20, 2015, “Polydor” and “Universal Music Enterprises” labels released  “The Complete Matrix Tapes”, an four disc box set by Velvet Underground (The).  In November and December 1969, The Velvet Underground were playing in two San Francisco venues the “Family Dog” and the “Matrix”. During the18 night performances, most of the gigs were recorded on a four-track recorder. The recordings from those shows are used for “The Complete Matrix Tapes”, the four-disc box set containing 42 recordings, including 9 previously unreleased tracks.

The band’s first album released in US was recorded in March and April 1978, at the “Basing Street Studios” in London, and in August and September 1978, at “The Automatt” in San Francisco, and was produced by Sandy Pearlman.

On November 1, 1970, “Warner Bros Records” released “American Beauty”, the sixth Grateful Dead album. It was recorded August – September 1970, at the “Wally Heider Studios” in San Francisco, and was produced by Jerry Garcia, Phil Lesh, Bob Weir, Pigpen, Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann,  and Steve Barncard. In 2003, “American Beauty” was ranked number 258 on “Rolling Stone” magazine’s list of the “500 Greatest Albums of all Time”.

Cheapthrills

On August 12, 1968, “Columbia” label released “Cheap Thrills”, the second Big Brother and the Holding Company studio album (first one with Janis Joplin as lead singer). It was recorded March-May 1968 and was produced by John Simon, who incorporated recordings of crowd noise to give the impression of a live album, but only the last song, band’s cover of “Ball and Chain”, had been recorded live at “The Fillmore” in San Francisco.  “Rolling Stone” magazine ranked “Cheap Thrills” at number 338 on its list of the “500 Greatest Albums of All Time”.

Rolling Stone Magazine First Number

On November 9, 1967, the first issue of “Rolling Stone” magazine was published in San Francisco. The name of the magazine have been created from three sources: the Muddy Waters song, the first rock ‘n’ roll record by Bob Dylan and The Rolling Stones. The magazine was founded by Jann Wenner, who is still the magazine’s editor-in-chief, and music critic Ralph J. Gleason. The magazine became popular for its musical coverage and  for political reporting by Hunter S. Thompson. The first issue cover featured a photo of John Lennon, dressed in army fatigues from his recent movie “How I Won the War”.
