On March 22, 1974, “DiscReet” label released “Apostrophe”, the eighteenth Frank Zappa album. It was recorded 1969 – 1974, at “Electric Lady Studios” in New York City; “Bolic” in Inglewood and “Paramount Studios” in Hollywood, and was produced by Frank Zappa. The album was released in stereo and quadraphonic formats.

It was recorded January 13–15, 1965, at “Columbia Recording Studios” in New York City, and was produced by Tom Wilson. In 2003, “Rolling Stone” magazine ranked the album at number 31 on its list of the “500 Greatest Albums of all Time.”

On March 22, 1963, “Parlaphone” label released “Please Please Me”, the debut Beatles studio album. It was recorded September 11,  November 26, 1962, February 11 – 20, 1963, at “EMI Studios” in London, and was produced by George Martin. The album was released as a mono LP, the stereo version was released on April 26, same year. In 2012, magazine “Rolling Stone” ranked “Please Please Me” at number 39 on its list of the “500 Greatest Albums of All Time.” “Rolling Stone” also ranked two songs from the album on its list of “500 Greatest Songs of All Time” – number 140, “I Saw Her Standing There”, and number 186, “Please Please Me”.

On March 21, 2004, John William “Johnny” Bristol died aged 65. He was musician, songwriter and producer, best known as a songwriter for the Motown”  label in the late 1960s and early 1970s. His personal most successful recording was “Hang On in There Baby”. As a producer and songwriter he has collaborated with Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell, Edwin Starr, David Ruffin, The Velvelettes, Gladys Knight & the Pips, Jr. Walker & the All Stars, Jermaine Jackson, Diana Ross & the Supremes, Smokey Robinson & the Miracles, Randy Crawford, Marlena Shaw, Johnny Mathis and Boz Scaggs.

On March 21, 2000, “Arista” label released “Gung Ho” album by Patti Smith. It was recorded in 2000, at “Sear Sound” in New York City, and was produced by Gil Norton. Magazine “Rolling Stone” included “Gung Ho” in its list of “Top 50 Albums of 2000”. The album cover includes picture of Smiths’s father, Grant Smith.

It was recorded September 1988 – January 1989, at “D&D Recording” in New York City, “Ocean Way Recording” in Hollywood, and was produced by Madonna, Patrick Leonard, Stephen Bray and Prince. In 2003, magazine “Rolling Stone” ranked the album at number 239 of its list of “500 greatest album of all time”. In 2006, magazine “Q” ranked the album at number 14 in its list of “40 Best Albums of the ’80s”. In 2012, “Slant Magazine” ranked the album at number 20 on its list of “Best Albums of the 1980s”. “Like a Prayer” was certified quadruple platinum by “RIAA”.

On March 21, 1988, “4AD” label released “Surfer Rosa”, the debut Pixies studio album. It was recorded in November 1987, at “Downtown Recorders” in Boston,  December 1987, at “Q Division” in Somerville, Massachusetts, and was produced by Steve Albini.  Magazines “Sounds” and “Melody Maker” named “Surfer Rosa” album of the year.

Final Cut

On March 21, 1983, “Harvest” label released “The Final Cut”, the twelfth Pink Floyd studio album. It was recorded July – December 1982, at “Mayfair Studios”, “RAK Studios”,”Olympic Studios”, “Abbey Road Studios”, “Eel Pie Studios”, “Audio International Studios” and “The Billiard Room” in London, and “Hookend Manor” in  Oxfordshire, and was produced by Roger Waters, James Guthrie and Michael Kamen. “The Final Cut” was band’s last studio album to include Roger Waters, and also the only Pink Floyd album that does not feature keyboardist Richard Wright. In 1997, the album was certified 2 x Platinum in US by “RIAA”.
