The Incredible String Band: Same

On June 1, 1966, “Elektra” label released the self-titled, debut Incredible String Band (The) album. It was recorded in 1966, at “Sound Techniques” in London, and was produced by Joe Boyd. In the Melody Maker’s annual poll, “The Incredible String Band” won the title “Folk Album of the Year”.

In April 1987, “Organik” and  “Wax Trax! Records” labels released the self-titled, debut Young Gods (The) album.  It was recorded in 1987, at “Artag Studio”, in Zurich, and was produced by Roli Mosimann.  “The Young Gods” was voted “Album of the Year” in UK by “Melody Maker”,

Blue Öyster Cult: Secret Treaties

In April 1974, “Columbia” label released “Secret Treaties”, the third Blue Öyster Cult studio album.  It was recorded in 1974, at “CBS Studios” in New York City, and was produced by Murray Krugman, David Lucas and Sandy Pearlman. The album cover art was by Ron Lesser. In 1975, a poll of critics of “Melody Maker” magazine voted “Secret Treaties” as the “Top Rock Album of All Time”.

On October 11, 1993, “This Way Up” label released the self – titled, debut Tindersticks album. It was recorded in May 1993, at “Townhouse III” in London, and was produced by Stuart Staples, David Boulter, Neil Fraser, Dickon Hinchliffe, Mark Colwill, Alistair Macaulay, and Ian Caple. “Melody Maker” magazine named it album of the year in the UK.

On September 23, 1991, “Creation Records” label released “Screamadelica”, the third Primal Scream studio album. It was recorded 1990 – 1991, and was produced by The Orb, Hypnotone, Andrew Weatherall, Hugo Nicolson and Jimmy Miller. In 1991, “Melody Maker” and “Select” magazines named “Screamadelica” “Album of the Year”; the album won the first “Mercury Music Prize” in 1992; in 2003,  “NME” magazine placed it at no. 23 in its list of the “100 Best Albums Ever”, and in  2006, the magazine placed it at number 15 in its list of the “Greatest British Albums Ever”; in 2000, “Q” magazine placed “Screamadelica” at number 18 on its list of the “100 Greatest British Albums, and in 2001, the magazine placed it at number 81 on its list of the “Top 100 Albums of All Time”.

On July 11, 1980, “EMI” label released “Searching for the Young Soul Rebels”, the debut Dexys Midnight Runners studio album. It was recorded in 1979 – 1980, at “Chipping Norton Recording Studios” in Oxfordshire, and was produced by Pete Wingfield.  “The Guardian” ranked the album at number 93 on its list of the “100 Best Albums Ever” and “Melody Maker” ranked it at number 42 on its list of the “All Time Top 100 Albums”.

Surfer Rosa

On March 21, 1988, “4AD” label released “Surfer Rosa”, the debut Pixies studio album. It was recorded in November 1987, at “Downtown Recorders” in Boston,  December 1987, at “Q Division” in Somerville, Massachusetts, and was produced by Steve Albini.  Magazines “Sounds” and “Melody Maker” named “Surfer Rosa” album of the year.

Melody Maker 1926

On January 2, 1926, first issue of “Melody Maker”, British weekly magazine was published.  “Melody Maker” was probably the earliest world music magazine and at its beginnings it was magazine for jazz, dance bands and musicians.  Publisher was Lawrence Wright and the first editor was Edgar Jackson. In 2000 “Melody Maker’ was merged into “New Musical Express”.
