U2: All That You Can’t Leave Behind

On October 30, 2000, “Island” label released “All That You Can’t Leave Behind”, the tenth U2 studio album.  It was recorded 1998 – 2000, at the” HQ”,” Windmill Lane Studios”,”Westland Studios” and“Totally Wired” in Dublin, and was produced by Daniel Lanois and Brian Eno. The album and its songs won seven “Grammy Awards”.  In 2012, “Rolling Stone” magazine ranked “All That You Can’t Leave Behind” at number 280 at its list of “The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time”.

On October 26, 1967,”Stax” label released “Soul Men”, the third Sam & Dave album.  It was recorded August – October 1967, and was produced by Isaac Hayes and David Porter. The album featured the single “Soul Man” that became one of the R&B classics and won  Sam & Dave a “Grammy” in 1967 for” Best R&B Group, Vocal or Instrumental”.

On October 17, 2000, “American Recordings” label released “American III: Solitary Man”, the 85th Johnny Cash album overall and the third album in the “American series”. The album was produced by John Carter Cash and Rick Rubin. “American III: Solitary Man” won “Grammy” award for “Best Male Country Vocal Performance” for Cash’s version of the Neil Diamond classic “Solitary Man”.

On October 13, 1978, “Family Productions” label released “52nd Street”, the sixth Billy Joel studio album. It was recorded July – August 1978, at the  “A&R Recording, Inc”., 799 7th Avenue at 52nd Street, New York City. The album won 1979 “Grammy for Album of the Year”. In 2003, “52nd Street” was ranked by the magazine “Rolling Stone” number 352  on its list of the “500 Greatest Albums of all Time”.

On August 20, 1979, “Columbia” released “Slow Train Coming”, the nineteenth Bob Dylan studio album. It was recorded April – May 1979, and was produced by Barry Beckett and Jerry Wexler. The tracks “Gotta Serve Somebody”  won Dylan “Grammy Award” for “Best rock vocal performance by a male in 1980”.

Phil Ramone

On March 30, 2013, Phillip “Phil” Ramone died aged 79. He was musician (violin), recording engineer, producer, and composer, in 1958, together with Jack Arnold he founded the recording studio “A & R Recording, Inc.” later became record company. Ramone is regarded as one of the most successful music producers ever, with 14 “Grammy” awards and cooperation with names such as Bob Dylan, Ray Charles, Elton John and Paul McCartney. He is also known as producer of the first major commercial release on CD, Billy Joel’s 1982 album “52nd Street”.
