On March 21, 1989, “Sire” label released “Like a Prayer”, the fourth Madonna studio album. It was recorded September 1988 – January 1989, at “D&D Recording” in New York City, “Ocean Way Recording” in Hollywood, and was produced by Madonna, Patrick Leonard, Stephen Bray and Prince. In 2003, magazine “Rolling Stone” ranked the album at number 239 of its list of “500 greatest album of all time”. In 2006, magazine “Q” ranked the album at number 14 in its list of “40 Best Albums of the ’80s”. In 2012, “Slant Magazine” ranked the album at number 20 on its list of “Best Albums of the 1980s”. “Like a Prayer” was certified quadruple platinum by “RIAA”.

Surfer Rosa

On March 21, 1988, “4AD” label released “Surfer Rosa”, the debut Pixies studio album. It was recorded in November 1987, at “Downtown Recorders” in Boston,  December 1987, at “Q Division” in Somerville, Massachusetts, and was produced by Steve Albini.  Magazines “Sounds” and “Melody Maker” named “Surfer Rosa” album of the year.

Final Cut

On March 21, 1983, “Harvest” label released “The Final Cut”, the twelfth Pink Floyd studio album. It was recorded July – December 1982, at “Mayfair Studios”, “RAK Studios”,”Olympic Studios”, “Abbey Road Studios”, “Eel Pie Studios”, “Audio International Studios” and “The Billiard Room” in London, and “Hookend Manor” in  Oxfordshire, and was produced by Roger Waters, James Guthrie and Michael Kamen. “The Final Cut” was band’s last studio album to include Roger Waters, and also the only Pink Floyd album that does not feature keyboardist Richard Wright. In 1997, the album was certified 2 x Platinum in US by “RIAA”.

Gil Evans

On March 20, 1988, Ian Ernest Gilmore “Gil” Evans died aged 75. He was musician (piano), arranger, composer and bandleader, had important role in the development of free jazz, cool jazz, modal jazz and jazz fusion. Evans performed and recorded with many important jazz musicians including: Miles Davis, Lee Konitz, Glen Hall, Steve Lacy, Claude Thornhill, Johnny Mathis, Hal McKusick, Marcy Lutes, Helen Merill, Don Elliot, Astrud Gilberto and Kenny Burrell. In 1986, Evans was inducted into the “Down Beat”  “Jazz Hall of Fame”. He won two “Grammy Awards” – in1960: “Sketches of Spain”, “Grammy Award for Best Original  Jazz Composition” with Miles Davis; in 1986: “Bud and Bird”, “Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Performance, Big Band”.

It was recorded in summer 2011, and was produced by Esperanza Spalding, Q-Tip and Dave Love. The album won two “Grammy Awards”, for “Best Jazz Vocal Album” and “Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocalist(s) for the track, “City of Roses”.
