Alice Coltrane: Universal Consciousness

In September 1971, “Impulse!” label released “Universal Consciousness”, the fifth Alice Coltrane album. It was recorded April – June, 1971, in New York City and at the Coltrane’s home studios in Dix Hills, New York, and was produced by Brian Konairz and Alice Coltrane.

In July 1972, “CBS” label released “Fifth”, the fifth Soft Machine studio album. It was recorded November – December 1971, January – February 1972, at “Advision Studios” in London, and was produced by Elton Dean, Mike Ratledge, Hugh Hopper, Roy Babbington, Phil Howard and John Marshall.

In May 1972, “RCA” label released “Self”, the fourth Quintessence studio album. Tracks 8 and 9 were recorded live in December 1971 at Exeter University, and the other tracks were recorded in 1972, at “Olympic Studios” in London. The album was produced by Sambhu Babaji, Maha Dev, Shiva Shankar Jones, Jake Milton, Allan Mostert and Raja Ram.

On April 5, 1971, “Atlantic” label released “Satori”, the second Flower Travellin’ Band studio album. It was recorded in 1970, and was produced by Yuya Uchida and Ikuzo Prita. In 2007, “Rolling Stone Japan” magazine rated Satori #71 on their list of the “100 Greatest Japanese Rock Albums of All Time”.
