Lambchop: Showtunes

On May 21, 2021, “City Slang” label released “Showtunes”, the 15th Lambchop album. It was recorded 2020 – 2021, in Nashville, Minneapolis, Los Angeles, Cologne, Hoboken, and was produced by Ryan Olson, Kurt Wagner and Jeremy Ferguson.

Leo Kotke: 6 & 12 String Guitar

In December 1969, “Takoma” label released “6 and 12-String Guitar”, the second Leo Kottke album. It was recorded in 1969, at “Empire Photo Sound” in Minneapolis.

  8. Watermelon (while at Watermelon Park Music Festival I had the opportunity to play a banjo in the middle of the night for a wandering drunk. When I finished, he vomited—an astute comment on my playing. Made me feel very distinguished)
  9. Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring (J.S. Bach – the engineer called this the ancient joy of man’s desire). (Bach had twenty children because his organ didn’t have any stops)
  10. The Fisherman (this is about the mad fishermen of the North whose ice fishing spots resemble national shrines)
  11. The Tennessee Toad (who made an epic journey from Ohio to Tennessee)
  12. Busted Bicycle (reluctance)
  13. The Brain of the Purple Mountain (from A. L. Tennyson)
  14. Coolidge Rising (while rising from the sink, cupboard doors opened and engulfed his head; while turning to the right to avoid the whole incident he walked into a refrigerator—which afforded a good chin rest for staring at some bananas in a basket)

On June 1, 1993, “TeenBeat Records” label released “The Serpentine Similar”, the debut Gastr del Sol studio album. It was recorded 1992 – 1993, at “Experimental Sound” in Chicago, Illinois, “5th Floor” in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and was produced by Brian Paulson.

Tony Glover

On May 29, 2019, David Curtis Glover aka Tony “Little Sun” Glover died aged 79. He was singer, musician (harmonica) and music critic. In 1963, together with John Koerner and Dave Ray he formed the blues trio Koerner, Ray & Glover. In the late sixties, Glover was disc jockey on “KDWB-AM” radio in Minneapolis where he formed the band Nine Below Zero. He was a music critic, writing articles for “Rolling Stone”, “Sign Out”, “Hit Parader”, “Creem”, and other music magazines. Glover wrote liner notes for albums by John Lee Hooker, John Hammond, Sonny Terry, Michael Lessac, Sonny & Brownie, Willie & the Bees and the Jayhawks, and for “The Bootleg Series Vol. 4: Bob Dylan Live 1966”, “The Royal Albert Hall Concert”. Glover was the author of several blues harp songbooks and along with Ward Gaines and Scott Dirks, a co-author, of Little Walter biography “Blues with a Feeling: The Little Walter Story”. He taught harmonica playing Mick Jagger and David Johansen.

On April 8, 1997, “DGC Records” label “Retreat from the Sun”, the third That Dog studio album. It was recorded 1996 – 1997, at “Sunset Sound Factory” in Los Angeles, and was produced by Brad Wood, Anna Waronker, Petra Haden, Rachel Haden and Tony Maxwell.

On October 2, 1984, “Twin / Tone Records” label released “Let It Be” the third Replacements (The) studio album. It was recorded August 1983 – February 1984, at “Blackberry Way Studios” in Minneapolis, and was produced by Steve Fjelstad, Peter Jesperso and Paul Westerberg. In 2003 “Rolling Stone” magazine ranked “Let it Be” at number 239 on its list of the “500 Greatest Albums of All Time”. The album opening track “I Will Dare” has been inducted in the “Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll”.
