On January 21, 2025, Eric Garth Hudson died aged 87. He was multi-instrumentalist (piano, keyboards, accordion and saxophone), member of the Burrito DeLux, but was best known as the keyboardist and saxophonist for The Band. In 1994, as member of The Band, he was inducted into the “Rock and Roll Hall of Fame”. Magazine “Keyboard” described Hudson as “the most brilliant organist in the rock world”. As leader, Hudson released three albums (two studio and one live).

On December 17, 1999, Grover Washington, Jr. died aged 56. He was musician (saxophone), composer and arranger, considered to be one of the founders of the smooth jazz genre. Some of his most popular works feature his own compositions and covers of “Mister Magic”, “Take Five”, “Soulful Strut”, “Reed Seed”, “Black Frost”, “Winelight”, “Inner City Blues” and “The Best is Yet to Come”. In his career he has performed and recorded with many famous musicians, including Kathleen Battle, Kenny Burrell, Hank Crawford, Charles Earland, Dexter Gordon, Urbie Green, Eddie Henderson, Masaru Imada, Boogaloo Joe Jones, Idris Muhammad, Gerry Mulligan, Don Sebesky, Johnny “Hammond” Smith, Melvin Sparks, Leon Spencer, Mal Waldron, Randy Weston, Bill Withers and Patti LaBelle.
John Coltrane
On July 17, 1967,John William Coltrane, died aged 40. He was musician (saxophones) and composer, played key role in the process of modernizing of jazz music. With the spiritual dimension in his music and superb technique as saxophonist, he influenced innumerable musicians from various music genres. Coltrane has worked with some of the most important musicians in the jazz history including Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, Johnny Hartman, Pharaoh Sanders and Dizzy Gillespie. His 1965 album “A Love Supreme” is regarded as one of the best and most important jazz album of all times.
Ornette Coleman
On June 11, 2015, Randolph Denard Ornette Coleman, died aged 85. He was musician (saxophone, violin, trumpet), regarded as one of the most important and influential artists in the history of jazz music. Coleman was the major innovator of the free jazz movement in the 60’s, and invented the name “free jazz” with a name of his album. His third studio album from 1959, “The shape of the jazz to come” is regarded as one of the most important albums in the history of modern jazz.
