Zakir Hussain

On December 15, 2024, Ustad Zakir Hussain died aged 73. He was musician (tabla, percussion), composer, music producer and film actor, considered as one of the greatest tabla players of all time.Hussain recorded and performed with number of famous musicians, among the others with John McLaughlin, Jan Garbarek, Mickey Hart, Ravi Shankar, Bill Laswell, Shankar Lakshminarayana, Pat Martino, Shakti, John Handy, Pharaoh Sanders, Ali Akbar Khan and Charles Lloyd. For his work he was awarded the “Govt of India’s Sangeet Natak Akademi Award “, “Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship”, “Ratna Sadsya”, and the “United States National Endowment for the Arts’ National Heritage Fellowship”. Hussain won four “Grammy Awards”.

Young Fathers: Heavy, Heavy

On February 3, 2023, “Ninja Tune” label released “Heavy Heavy”, the fourth Young Fathers studio album. It was recorded in 2022, at “Out of the Blue” in Leith, Scotland, “Narcissus Studio” in London, “Northwind” in Durban, South Africa, and was produced by Graham “G” Hastings At the 2023 “Mercury Prize”, the album won the “Scottish Album of the Year Award”.

John Marshall

On September 16, 2023, John Stanley Marshall died aged 82. He was musician (drums, percussion), member of Soft Machine, but was best known as founding member of Nucleus. He recorded and performed with various musician and bands including Arthur Brown, Allan Holdsworth, J.J. Jackson, Barney Kessel, Alexis Korner, Eberhard Weber, Arild Andersen, John Abercrombie, Charlie Mariano, John Surman, Graham Collier, Michael Gibbs, Keith Tippett, Centipede, Jack Bruce, John McLaughlin, Dick Morrissey, Hugh Hopper, Elton Dean, Vassilis Tsabropoulos, Michael Garrick, Neil Ardley, Mike Westbrook, Georgie Game, Indo-Jazz Fusions, Bill Fay, Mike d’Abo, Chris Spedding, Top Topham, Chitinous Ensemble, Linda Hoyle, Spontaneous Music Orchestra, Volker Kriege, John Williams, Pork Pie, Jasper van’t Hof, Alan Skidmore, Gil Evans, Uli Beckerhoff, Towering Inferno, Wolfgang Mirbach, Theo Travis and Rot Powell.

Alan White

On May 26, 2022, Alan White died aged 72. He was musician (drums, percussion), performed and recorded with John Lennon, George Harrison, Terry Reid, Donovan, The Ventures, Joe Cocker, Ginger Baker’s Air Force, Gary Wright, Jesse Davis, Paul Kossoff, Rick Wakeman, Steve Howe, Eddie Harris, Gary Wright, Chris Squire, Johnny Harris and Alan Price, but was best known as drummer of Yes. As leader, he released one album. In 2017, White was inducted into the “Rock and Roll Hall of Fame”, as a member of Yes.  

Taylor Hawkins

On March 25, 2022, Oliver Taylor Hawkins died aged 50. He was musician (drums, percussion, guitar, piano), singer and songwriter, worked with Sass Jordan, Alanis Morissette and band Sylvia. In 2004, Hawkins formed his project Taylor Hawkins and the Coattail Riders, but was best known as drummer of Foo Fighters. In 2005, magazine ”Rhythm” voted him “Best Rock Drummer”.

David Longdon

On November 20, 2021, David Longdon died aged 56. He was musician (guitar, flute, keyboards, bass, mandolin, lute, banjo, accordion, dulcimer, psaltry, vibraphone, theremin, glockenspiel, percussion), singer and song-writer, member of the band The Gift Horse. He recorded with Louis Philippe, The Tangent, The Charlatans, Dave Kerzner, Nick Beggs, Rob Reed, Nick D’ Virgilio, Christina Booth and Steve Hackett, but was best known as member and the lead singer of the band Big Big Train. As leader, Longdon released one album .

Jimmy Black

On November 1, 2008, James Carl Inkanish, Jr. aka Jimmy Carl Black died aged 70. He was musician (drums, percussion), vocalist, songwriter and music producer, member of Muffin Men, Captain Beefheart, Geronimo Black, The Grandmothers, Black, Brown and Blue and Strange News From Mars, but was best known as a drummer and vocalist of The Mothers of Invention. As leader he released 21 albums.

Lee Kerslake

On September 19, 2020, Lee Kerslake died aged 73. He was musician (drums, percussion, keyboards, trumpet, kazoo, vocal), recorded and performed with The Gods, Head Machine, Toe Fat, National Head Band, Ken Hensley, David Byron, Living Loud, Ozzy Osborne, but was best known as drummer of Uriah Heep. With Swedish singer Stefan Berggren he formed Berggren Kerslake Band.
