In January 1978, “Blank” label released “The Modern Dance”, debut Pere Ubu studio album. It was recorded October 1976; January 1977; November 1977, at “Cleveland Recording” and “Suma Studios” in Cleveland, Ohio, and was produced by David Thomas, Tom Herman, Allen Ravenstine, Tony Maimone, Scott Krauss, Tim Wrightand Ken Hamann.

On August 21, 2015, “Fire Records” label released “Elitism for the People 1975-1978”, a vinyl box set by Pere Ubu that includes “The Modern Dance” and “Dub Housing” LP’s (remastered, both pressed on 180 gram vinyl in 3 mm sleeves), “The Hearpen Singles” (disco sleeve) and “Manhattan” (recorded live at “Max’s Kansas City” 1977, in printed disco sleeve) and an A3 poster from the 1977 “Datapanik” tour. The box also Includes unlimited streaming of “Elitism for the People 1975-1978” via the free “Bandcamp” app, plus high-quality download in MP3, FLAC and more.

Peter Laughner

On June 22, 1977, Peter Laughner, died aged 24. He was musician (guitar), singer and songwriter, described by Richie Unterberger as “probably the single biggest catalyst in the birth of Cleveland’s alternative rock scene in the mid 1970s.”  Laughner was the lead force in number of bands, including “Mr. Charlie”, “Cinderella Backstreet”, “Peter & The Wolves”, “The Blue Drivers and Friction”, but he is best known for his work with “Rocket From The Tombs” and the early work of “Pere Ubu”. He also wrote regularly for the magazine “Creem”.
