Robert Shakespeare

On December 8, 2021, Robert Warren Dale Shakespeare died aged 68. He was musician (bass), singer and record producer, nicknamed “Basspeare”. Regarded as one of the most influential reggae bassists, Shakespeare performed, recorded and produced with Peter Tosh, Jimmy Cliff, U-Roy, Bunny Wailer, Dennis Brown, Gregory Isaacs, Sugar Minott, Marianne Faithfull, Serge Gainsbourg, Rico, Material, Augustus Pablo, Yellowman, Madonna, Herbie Hancock, Mick Jagger, Bob Dylan, Jackson Browne, Cyndi Lauper, Joe Cocker, Yoko Ono, Grace Jones, Yelloman, Amp Fiddler, Barry Reynolds, Beenie Man, Brent Dowe, Britney Spears, Chaka Demus & Pliers, Cornell Campbell, Culture, Cutty Ranks, Don Carlos, Eljuri, Fiona Branson, Foundation, Frankie Paul, Fugees, Half Pint, Gwen Guthrie, Home T4, I Wayne, Ian Dury, Ini Kamoze, The Itals, Jacob Miller, Kazumi Watanabe, Ky – Mani Marley, Linval Thompson, Matisyahu, Maxi Priest, Michael Franti & Spearhead, Wailing Souls, Toots Hibbert, Michael Rose, Mighty Diamonds, Monty Alexander, Mr. Anonymous, Ronnie Davis, Yami Bolo, No Doubt, Vanessa da Mata, Prince Far I, Prince Jammy, Shabba Ranks, Sinead O’Connor, Michael Palmer, Tiken Jah Fakoly, Sugar Minott, Suggs, and Simply Red. Shakespeare was member of the bands The Revolutionaries and The Aggrovators, but was best known as part of the duo Sly and Robbie.
